Mountlake Terrace Garden Club

History - 1992 to 1995

The Mountlake Terrace Garden Club (MLTGC) was founded in 1992 when Henry Andes and Gary Van Winkle came to a meeting of the R. Pac Advisory Board of which Robert Lytle was Chairman. They requested permission to take care of the 220th and I5 site and improve the appearance of the landscape. Permission was granted and Robert Lytle was included as a member. George Rowe was the only other member of the MLTGC at this time.

Soon after, the MLTGC built their first site at the Ballinger Golf Course. The MLTGC admitted new members: John and Marie Shallenberger, Lois Caslin, Anna Marie Klinke, Joyce Barry, Bill Rounds, and Janet Arthur.

The MLTGC applied for a grant of $5000 from the city of Mountlake Terrace to build a total of four sites and a pea patch. The city would only grant $2000 and deemed the pea patch to be too costly. The goal of the MLTGC at this time was to beautify the city without cost to the city. The MLTGC added the Brier Fire Station site and two new members: Bonnie Mercer and Joy Admundston.  The site on 236th was then built and Bobbie Newlin was welcomed as a new member. In 1993, the MLTGC built the site on 244th and added new member Roger Bergh.

Henry Andes was the first president of the MLTGC in 1992. Robert Lytle was elected the second president and Joyce Barry was the third president. Bobby Newman was then voted in as president. The MLTGC joined the Evergreen District Everett Club and was classified as a non profit club.

In 1995, Dave Mercer joined the MLTGC. Dave brought his talents to the club and help to restructure the MLTGC. Dave was elected president and the MLTGC was transformed to a new type of gardening club using the city funds to allow the club to build new sites.

Today....

The MLTGC is a service club with 23 members (and growing) who have a love for the city and a desire to make it a better place for our residents and business owners.

The MLTGC currently maintains seven areas throughout the city and is currently working with the city government to reconstruct each of the four city entry sites. The MLTGC is a non-profit organization that receives community funding from the city that only covers half of the cost of rebuilding each site, but the MLTGC are able to stretch the dollars with volunteer labor. In 2004, the MLTGC rebuilt the I-5 Park & Ride site. In May of 2005, the MLTGC completed work on the entry site at 244th Street S.W. and 48th Ave W. In 2006, the MLTGC completed construction on two more sites. One at the fire station on 228th and the other site on Lakeview Drive at the Lake Ballinger playfields.
